What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that recreates the breast shape in patients who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Breast reconstruction aims to reconstruct the size, shape, and symmetry of the patient’s natural breasts as closely as possible.
What are the advantages of Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction restores the body’s original contour and thus improves the self-image of patients who have undergone a mastectomy. This procedure provides psychological benefits to those who don’t want to be constantly reminded of past illness by living with the resulting loss of breast tissue. Breast reconstruction is a great way to mark the beginning of a healthy new start in life following a major illness, trauma, or injury.
When is the best time to undergo Breast Reconstruction surgery?
This procedure should be approved by your oncologist and may depend on your stage of cancer or cancer treatment. It is necessary to be cleared of any other health concerns to enable your body to recover easily. The procedure may be performed at the same time as the mastectomy, or your doctors may recommend that you have it done at a later date. The timing of reconstruction must also take into consideration any additional therapies necessary for your complete treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy. Great care will be taken to coordinate the best plan between our team and your oncologist.
What happens during Breast Reconstruction?
Every surgery is unique to each patient, and there are several techniques that may be used, depending on your body type, condition, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. The most frequently performed procedure utilizes a tissue expander filled with saline solution, upon which the breast mound is reconstructed and contoured. This procedure typically utilizes the mastectomy incisions to minimize additional scars.
Another technique that may be used is known as flap reconstruction. This technique uses the patient’s own muscle or fatty tissue to reconstruct the breast mound. Tissue may be harvested from such areas of the body as the abdomen, back, and/or buttocks. Some patients may require additional procedures such as nipple reconstruction, or a breast lift in combination with reconstruction surgery.
Recovery after Breast Reconstruction
Many patients experience mild discomfort during the first week, and we recommend resting from all physical activities during this period. You may be required to wear a support garment to protect healing tissue and help the body adjust to its new contour. Surgical dressings will be removed in three days, and drains are removed within weeks. It will take several weeks for you to gradually resume normal physical activities, but our staff will recommend specific stretching exercises to help your body regain its natural movement after surgery. Scars will begin to fade after several weeks, at which time your newly reconstructed breasts will be settled in place, and you may gradually increase your activity level.
How Much Does Breast Reconstruction Cost in Melbourne?
Breast reconstruction is a very personalized procedure, so costs will naturally vary between patients. Health insurance providers cover breast reconstruction in most cases. To assist patients with costs not covered by insurance, our office offers a financing plan and flexible payment methods.
