Breast implant removal (explant)

In Melbourne, FL

Over time, as your natural breast tissue changes, an implant may rupture or shift requiring removal. Every patient forms some amount of scar tissue surrounding the implant. This is called capsular contracture. Depending on the amount of capsular contracture present, the shape or position of the implant may change. This is the most common reason to remove or exchange implants. If you are seeking breast implant removal in Melbourne, Viera, Brevard County, and neighboring areas in Central Florida, the professional team at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, led by double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, and board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, provide breast implant removal and other medical and cosmetic procedures in a comfortable and convenient state-of-the-art practice.

WHAT IS BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL?

Breast implant removal is a type of revision surgery used to correct problems with the original implants in cases of implant rupture or where the implants have shifted position, or simply if you’d like to remove or exchange your existing implants for another of a different shape or size. A breast explant surgery can be personalized to your needs. During your breast implant removal surgery, your surgeon will remove breast implants, can place new implants, and can also perform a breast lift to tighten the surrounding breast tissue and skin.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL?

You should immediately contact our office to determine whether you need to have your implants removed or exchanged if you experience any injury, trauma or complications from your breast augmentation procedure, or if there is any infection at the site of the implant, as these may be medical complications. If the implant leaks, has shifted its position, is rippling or wrinkling, or if your nipples do not appear properly positioned, your implants may need to be removed, re-positioned, or exchanged. If the skin beneath the breast has thinned and stretched, it may be advisable to exchange the implants for another size. You may simply feel dissatisfied with the appearance or feel of your implants and want to try a different size, shape or material. Or you may just decide to remove the implants altogether. Any of these circumstances could make you a good candidate for this procedure. Contact our office to learn more about breast implant removal and if it may be right for you.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL?

The procedure for removing breast implants is safe and simple. Implants are most often removed through the original incisions that were used to insert them during your augmentation surgery. If your implants have been in place for many years, simply removing them may cause other concerns, such as stretched-out skin and excess sagging. To correct this, you may opt for an implant exchange or a breast lift to be performed in combination with implant removal.

RECOVERY AFTER BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL

Breast implant removal will require a similar recovery process as your original augmentation procedure, so we recommend that you plan to take time for recovery. You should ideally rest for at least one week and suspend strenuous activities for a period of about six weeks. You may be required to wear a support garment to protect healing tissue and help the body adapt to its new contour. Over several weeks, you can gradually increase the level of physical activity and return to your normal lifestyle.

HOW MUCH DOES BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL COST IN MELBOURNE, FL?

Every patient has specific needs. Therefore each procedure is different, and for this reason, prices will vary between patients. Most health insurance providers do not typically cover breast implant removal. To keep costs affordable for our patients, our office provides flexible financing methods and payment options to provide maximum flexibility.

If you are dissatisfied or feel any discomfort as a result of your breast augmentation procedure, you can have your breast implants removed or replaced.
