Many adults develop drooping skin on the eyelids, as well as sagging bags around the eyes that make them look old and weary, and in some cases, even obstructing vision. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a safe and popular procedure that corrects drooping eyelids to improve your appearance and comfort. At Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, and board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, combine their expertise in plastic surgery and dermatology to provide excellence in such delicate cosmetic procedures as blepharoplasty for residents of Melbourne, Viera, Brevard County, and nearby communities in Central Florida who want to rejuvenate the area around the eyes to create a more alert and youthful appearance.
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that removes fatty tissue and excess skin from the area surrounding the eyes, creating a smoother and more youthful-looking facial contour. This procedure effectively removes puffy bags that accumulate around the eyes and trims back loose sagging skin in the eyelids that impart an aged and tired appearance and, in many cases, obstruct vision.
Blepharoplasty surgically removes excess loose skin that accumulates in the eyelids and around the eyes and can be safely performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both. In some cases, sagging and drooping eyelids may actually impair a person’s ability to see well. Puffy bags under the eyes and sagging skin in the eyelids also makes people look older. Most blepharoplasty patients report feeling dramatically rejuvenated after the procedure, and many report that their vision has improved after removing excess skin that was affecting their ability to open their eyes properly.
Blepharoplasty may be performed on almost any adult in good health, but patients with certain medical conditions affecting the eyes and vision, such as glaucoma, may be advised to forego this procedure. Also note that blepharoplasty removes excess skin from the eyelids, but does not eliminate wrinkles and “crows feet” at the corners of the eyes. In order to treat other concerns, blepharoplasty may be performed in combination with a brow lift or other facial procedures. If you feel that your vision may be impaired by droopy upper lids, your eye doctor can perform visual field testing to see if you may qualify for blepharoplasty.
Although blepharoplasty is a delicate procedure requiring the skill of an experienced surgeon, the surgery is considered minimally invasive and may be completed in less than three hours using general or local anesthesia. The surgeon creates incisions in the eyelid’s natural creases through which excess fatty tissue is extracted, and loose, sagging skin is trimmed away to create a smooth, youthful appearance. Dressings will be applied over the incisions immediately following surgery.
Most patients require a week to recover from blepharoplasty. Our team may also prescribe antiseptic eye drops or ointment that you may use to prevent any infection and alleviate any discomfort during the recovery period. You will be advised to keep your head and neck elevated during this period. You should allow the eyes to rest as much as possible during this period by getting plenty of sleep and avoiding any undue eye strain, such as extended exposure to digital screens.
Blepharoplasty will not negatively affect your eyesight, although the procedure is not recommended for individuals with certain eye conditions, such as glaucoma. In many cases, blepharoplasty affects eyesight for the better by removing skin that may be obstructing or partially obstructing vision.
Each procedure is customized. You may choose to have surgery on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, which will affect the cost of the procedure, as will any additional procedures you may choose to combine with blepharoplasty. If the excess skin on the eyelids obstructs your vision, your health insurance carrier may cover the procedure, but it is not covered as an elective procedure. Our office provides flexible financing and several payment options to help all of our patients manage costs.
