Sagging skin or excess fat in the upper arms is a common problem that makes people appear older than they really are, and make it difficult to feel confident in clothing. For residents of Melbourne, Viera, Brevard County, or neighboring communities in the Central Florida region, the specialists at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, led by double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, and board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, offer cosmetic solutions such as brachioplasty surgery to restore tone and definition to the upper arm.
Brachioplasty is the medical name for an arm lift, which refers to a surgical procedure that tones and defines the upper arm by trimming away sagging skin and excess fatty deposits.
The skin of the upper arms notoriously loses elasticity as a consequence of gravity, weight fluctuations, aging or hereditary conditions. Fatty tissue also accumulates in the area and creates a lax, flaccid deposit that hangs from the upper arms like wings when you extend your arm. Very often, this condition may not be sufficiently improved by diet and exercise alone. Brachioplasty is a safe, effective, and popular procedure among men and women to eliminate flaccid skin and fatty tissue in the upper arm, creating a toned and defined contour.
Any healthy adult who wants to rejuvenate the appearance of their upper arms and has maintained a stable, healthy weight for a year or more may benefit from brachioplasty. If you are still actively losing weight, it is best to wait until you reach your ideal weight, because additional weight loss may detract from the results of the arm lift procedure. Brachioplasty is ideal for adult men and women who maintain a stable weight because these patients are more likely to enjoy longer lasting results.
Brachioplasty surgery is a safe and simple procedure that is frequently performed on an outpatient basis; however, it is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia and is performed through a hairline incision along the inside of the upper arm. Excess fat is removed with liposuction and or excision, and the remaining skin is contoured firmly around the muscles.
Initially, after the procedure, you may feel some soreness, and your skin may feel tight. These symptoms naturally diminish in a day or two, and you may return to light activity after several days. Your arms will be dressed in a compression garment after surgery is complete. After 72 hours, your dressings will be removed, and you may take your first shower. You will continue to wear a compression sleeve to reduce swelling and assist the healing process. We recommend that you wear the sleeve for four weeks and advise that you gradually resume non-strenuous activities after four or five days. We recommend that you hold off on strenuous exercise for four weeks. Our staff is happy to provide support and answer any questions you may have during your recovery period.
Brachioplasty leaves a very fine hairline scar that is discreetly camouflaged on the inside of the upper arm, making it barely visible during most normal activity and when your arms rest naturally at your sides.
Prices will vary depending on the extent of your procedure and any other procedures that you may choose to combine with the arm lift. Because most health insurance does not cover brachioplasty, our office provides a flexible financing plan and payment options for the convenience of all of our patients.
