WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

A chemical peel is a non-invasive exfoliation and collagen stimulation procedure that produces healthier and smoother skin by gently removing the outermost layer of the dermis, along with dead skin cells, pollutants, and minor imperfections that are present on that outer layer. Sunspots, acne scars, and discoloration are improved.

WHAT CONDITIONS ARE TREATED BY CHEMICAL PEELS?

Although most chemical peels are used to improve facial skin, other areas on the body may also benefit from chemical peels, such as the neck, hands, or décolleté area. A chemical peel can benefit you if you have any of the following skin conditions:

  • Acne
  • Blemishes
  • Dry, flaking skin
  • Growths on the skin, including pre-cancerous growths
  • Freckles
  • Scars
  • Sun damage
  • Sunspots
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Wrinkles and fine lines

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER A CHEMICAL PEEL?

A chemical peel can benefit almost any healthy man or woman, although the procedure is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or nursing.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS?

There are a number of different chemical peels to choose from, and they vary in composition, goal, and strength. Some formulas correct only the outermost layer of skin, while others treat deeper layers beneath the surface. Deeper peels are considered more invasive and require a lengthier recovery period but produce more dramatic results. Two of our most common peels are The Vi Peel and APEELE™.

  • Vi Peel – The Vi Peel is a “go-to” treatment for many of our patients. In as little as seven days after treatment, our patients notice softened lines and wrinkles, a more even skin tone, and a smoother texture.
  • APEELE™ – As a next-generation chemical peel, APEELE™ provides controlled exfoliation of damaged skin. Many of our patients see significant results after just one treatment. APEELE™ is ideal for reducing photodamage, hyperpigmentation, and acne and is safe on all skin types.

HOW DO CHEMICAL PEELS IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF THE SKIN?

A chemical peel takes about a half hour to complete the treatment. First, the face is thoroughly cleansed, then the chemical peel solution is applied to the surface of the skin. You may feel a mild stinging sensation during this part of the process. The chemical solution is left on the skin for a period of several minutes, and then gently removed. At this point, patients can leave and resume regular activities. A few days after the treatment, the skin will begin to peel, much like a sunburn. This peeling process gradually exposes a smoother, healthier-looking layer of new skin, as your skin sheds the old, damaged cells of the outer layer. Chemical peels may also be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as plastic surgeryliposuction, and injectable dermal fillers. A series of peels and at-home skin care is recommended for best results. Visit our For Your Best Self-online store for medical-grade skin care products.

RECOVERY FROM CHEMICAL PEELS

Depending on the type of chemical peel, full recovery may take up to 7 to 10 days with peeling, skin sensitivity, and redness during this period. The new layer of skin that emerges after a chemical peel is extremely sensitive to sunlight, so it is important that you wear protective clothing and use sunscreen at all times when going outdoors, especially during the first few weeks after treatment. In men, shaving of facial hair must also be postponed during the recovery period after a chemical peel so as not to shave off delicate skin cells. A series of peels and at-home skin care is recommended for best results.
