OTOPLASTY (EAR SURGERY) IN MELBOURNE, FL

In Melbourne, FL

One of the concerns treated with plastic surgery is ears that may be too large or stick out too far from the head, causing embarrassment and detracting from one’s appearance. Otoplasty corrects common cosmetic imperfections as well as structural problems in the ears. Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, led by double board-certified plastic surgeon Rebecca Novo, MD, and board-certified dermatologist Anita Saluja, MD, offers otoplasty to the residents of Melbourne, Viera, Brevard County, and nearby areas in Central Florida.

Who should consider Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a simple surgical procedure performed safely on thousands of patients yearly. Otoplasty corrects imperfections and structural problems in the ears to achieve a look that is in proportion to the facial features. Otoplasty may be performed on both adults and children, improving self-confidence. Otoplasty patients report dramatically improved satisfaction with their appearance.

What kinds of problems does Otoplasty correct?

Otoplasty may be used to correct the shape, size, position, or symmetry of the ears. Otoplasty can re-sculpt ears that are disproportionate to the facial features, or pin back ears that stick out. Otoplasty also corrects structural defects in the ear resulting from injury or genetic conditions, as well as other cosmetic concerns, such as earlobes that are too large or too small.

What is the best age to perform Otoplasty on a child?

The shape of the ear is pretty well determined by about age four in most children, with cartilage in the ear beginning to harden at about age seven or eight. The best time to perform the surgery is at around age six or seven, just prior to the hardening of the cartilage, as this will result in a much faster healing process, but otoplasty can also be performed safely on older children and teens.

How is Otoplasty surgery performed?

Otoplasty is one of the oldest and safest plastic surgery procedures in the field and is performed on thousands of patients of all ages every year. The procedure utilizes light or local anesthesia and usually takes about one hour per ear to complete. An incision is created behind the ear, camouflaged in the ear’s natural folds, through which the surgeon reshapes the cartilage and skin tissue. Every procedure is unique, addressing each patient’s condition and goals. Internal sutures are typically used to pin back ears that stick out too far from the head.

Is there a recovery period after Otoplasty?

Once the surgery is completed, a protective surgical dressing is positioned over the ears, which must remain in place for several days. You will be instructed to wear a soft headband to protect the ears while sleeping. Most patients require about a week to recover from otoplasty, and you may experience soreness, swelling, and bruising, which will naturally subside in a few days. You may resume light office work or school, and non-strenuous activities within a week, but you should avoid strenuous exercise for four to six weeks after the procedure to avoid any impact or injury to the ears.

How much does Otoplasty cost in Melbourne?

The cost of otoplasty surgery varies depending on what concerns are being addressed. In some cases, health insurance may cover the procedure, but to help patients manage expenses not covered by health insurance, our office provides easy financing and flexible payment methods.
