Your guide to early detection, skin protection, and expert care—brought to you by Dr. Saluja & Dr. Novo at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery
When it comes to skin cancer, early detection can be lifesaving. Regular self-exams allow you to spot subtle changes early—before they become more serious. Combined with an annual professional screening, this proactive approach can dramatically improve outcomes.
At Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, serving Melbourne, Indialantic, Viera, and the greater Brevard County area, we’re passionate about helping you protect and preserve your skin at every stage of life.
The ABCDE method is a trusted, dermatologist-approved way to evaluate moles and skin lesions. Keep these guidelines in mind during your monthly self-exams:
• A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
• B – Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges.
• C – Color: Varies from one area to another—shades of brown, black, tan, even red or blue.
• D – Diameter: Greater than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller.
• E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or symptoms (such as itching or bleeding).
If you notice even one of these signs, don’t wait—schedule a professional skin evaluation with one of our board-certified practitioners.
Monthly self-checks help you become familiar with your skin—so you can recognize what’s new or changing. Here’s how to do it thoroughly:
1. Start with a full-length mirror. Check your entire front and back, then each side with arms raised.
2. Examine arms and hands. Don’t forget underarms, palms, and between fingers.
3. Check legs and feet. Look at the backs of your legs, between your toes, and the soles of your feet.
4. Use a hand mirror to inspect the back of your neck and scalp. Part your hair for a closer look.
5. Finish with your back and buttocks, using a mirror or partner to assist.
Focus on often-overlooked areas: the scalp, under the nails, between the toes, and behind the ears.
Understanding what to look for helps you act fast. Here are the most frequently diagnosed skin cancers:
• Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Often appears as a pearly or waxy bump. Slow-growing, but should be treated promptly.
• Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): May present as a firm red nodule or scaly lesion. It can spread if left untreated.
• Melanoma: The most serious form, often arising from an existing mole. Look for dark, asymmetrical, evolving spots.
While self-exams are powerful, they don’t replace a professional skin cancer screening. At your annual appointment, a dermatology practitioner will perform a comprehensive full-body check using specialized tools combined with years of clinical experience.
These exams are especially critical for those living in sun-intense regions like Melbourne, Indialantic, Viera, and Brevard County, where UV exposure is high year-round.
Smart sun protection habits are your skin’s best defense. Our top dermatologist-approved tips:
• Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day—even on cloudy days and indoors! (Computers and screens emit blue light which is also skin damaging)
• Avoid sun exposure during peak UV hours (10 AM–4 PM).
• Wear protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• Strictly avoid tanning beds—no tan is worth the risk.
• Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors.
Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early. That’s why we encourage a two-part approach:
1. Monthly self-exams at home.
2. Annual professional skin screenings with a board-certified dermatology practitioner.
Dr. Saluja and her hand selected and trained practitioners bring unmatched expertise and compassionate care to every skin check, ensuring your skin stays healthy, protected, and beautifully you.
Your skin tells your story. Let us help you protect it.
