In Melbourne, FL

By: Dr. Rebecca Novo, written in collaboration with Dr. Robert Novo, a board-certified Anesthesiologist

When you are considering plastic surgery in Melbourne, FL, you may not be sure what type of anesthesia the doctor may use, since there are several options. The type of anesthesia your surgeon will use is often determined first by your medical history, as well as the type of procedure you are having.

At Dermatology + Plastics Surgery, our double board-certified plastic surgeons, Drs. Rebecca Novo and Renee Gasgarth are experienced and offer skin, face, breast, and body solutions for your aesthetic concerns. Call us today, and during your consultation, our team will discuss the most appropriate and safest type of anesthesia ideal for your procedure.

Types of Anesthesia Commonly Used in Plastic SurgeryFor Your Best Self Dr. Novo

The main reason for using anesthesia during elective surgery is to prevent pain that might otherwise occur during the procedure. Several types of anesthesia exist, including:

General Anesthesia

During a surgical procedure, general anesthesia can be administered to patients to prevent awareness and sensation. This is often considered the “deepest” and often safest type of anesthesia because the airway is controlled and protected with a breathing tube, and is mainly used when operations take place within or near muscles that need to be relaxed or longer or more delicate procedures where complete control of heart rate and blood pressure are needed.

“Twilight” Anesthesia

Twilight anesthesia, also known as intravenous sedation or IV sedation, is pain-blocking and anxiolytic drugs that are administered to the patient using an IV drip. With this kind of anesthesia, the patient undergoing surgery can remain responsive during the procedure but will be comfortable and may not remember most of the things that happened.

Local Anesthesia

This type of anesthesia is considered appropriate for minor or shorter surgical procedures often done in the office. Local anesthesia is injected with a needle into the skin at the planned procedure site. The patient will only feel dull pressure, without sharpness or pain. These medications typically wear off in 1-2 hours. Minor skin procedures, skin resurfacing, and upper blepharoplasty are a few procedures that use this kind of anesthesia.
